Minimize Your Exposure To Chemicals

Our environment has obstacles to our health. Chemicals are modern conveniences but can play havoc with your health. We need to be mindful of how we use these chemicals and ways to decrease our exposure and thus decrease our toxic load.

Fueling up our automobiles is a necessary chore. Gasoline is toxic, it contains methane and benzene. Both are proven carcinogens. Your fueling strategy is to stand upwind while putting gas in. If you can smell gas, move.

How about those plastics. Have you heard of Bisphenol-A? BPA for short. That is a chemical manufactures put in plastics to mold them and make them hard. BPA is a well known endocrine disruptor. That means it interrupts your hormone system. So foods and drinks stored in plastics containing BPA will be contaminated with it. The more fat there is in the food the higher the level of contamination. One way to decrease your exposure is to store your food in glass containers. Also, your plastic drink containers are a problem. You can switch to ceramic or stainless for a more safe option. Studies show that BPA has a link to the development of Diabetes type II.

When using cleaning products opt for the natural ones. Making your own from vinegar, baking soda dishwashing detergent and other natural organic products will lower your exposure to phthalates, triclosan, 2-butoxyethanol, and other unpronounceable toxic compounds.

The first step in dealing with the toxicity in our environment is to minimize your exposure. The second step is to help your body rid its self of the accumulated toxins. You can do that by taking part in a detoxification program. There are many good ones out there and there are some dangerous ones too. I never recommend doing the master cleanse with maple syrup and a 3 day fast. Your body needs nutrients to processes the toxins out of your body. That's where many people get sick in the first place. They aren't eating or taking the right nutrients to support both phase 1 and phase 2. You must have vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients for healthy detoxification to take place. There are a few good neutraceutical companies that make wonderful detox programs. Check your product ingredients and eat real food while you detox. You'll need the fiber to carry the waste products out of your body.

Losing Your Memory, Are You Sleeping?

Sleep, it's so important for a lot of things but studies have shown it is vital for your memory and brain health. A study in 2013 discusses sleeps role in memory. It is during sleep that you regenerate your body as well as your brain both physically and emotionally. During sleep you get rid of all the waste products and neurotoxins that build up, eliminating Beta Amyloid plaques that are implicated in  Alzheimer's Disease. There is a system that distributes nutrients and neurotransmitters while you sleep that is not active while you are awake. That is why sleep is so important! April Showers, Vitamin D and Depression.

April Showers, Right? What About Vitamin D and Depression? It's raining again and I'm still loving it. Wells are filling, reservoirs are filling, and the flowers are going to be stunning. This year California is getting record rainfall. According to California's water resources index, 90 inches so far in the Sierra Nevadas. Rainfall is great but that means it has to rain and that means people don't get out in the sun and get their vitamin D. Vitamin D is also called Cholecalciferol. You get Vitamin D from the sun. Your skin converts the ultra violet rays to Vitamin D. I know I haven't been outside with this rain. The sun only peeks through the clouds once in a while. The best time to expose yourself to sunlight is at 12 noon for half an hour as much skin as possible to the sun, ideally naked. A lot of people have trouble with that conversion. If you always wear sunscreen, have darker skin or never go in the sun, are pregnant or obese you may be deficient. Vit
